Welcome to Danube Cup 2026

…. celebrating its 10th anniversary

The Danube Cup is an annual International Student Startup Pitch  Competition for students of universities along the River Danube. Founded in 2016 by two of Hungary’s top institutions (Corvinus University of Budapest and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics) the competition’s mission is to propel student start-ups toward international success while fostering a high-impact network along the River Danube.

For its 10th-anniversary  edition, the Danube Cup returns to Vienna, hosted by the  Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) – for the second time in the DC’s history. As one of the largest business universities in Europe, WU offers an ideal environment for both national and international innovation. Amongst  130 business schools worldwide, the WU holds the “Triple Crown Accreditation” – awarded by AACSB, AMBA, and EQUIS, confirming the highest educational standards.

Beyond its business focus, entrepreneurship plays a significant role at WU. Through the specialized Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, the university has created a bridge between research and practice in this field for over 20 years. In addition, the WU Entrepreneurship Center provides a hands-on approach to entrepreneurship with a wide-ranging offer for startup support for over 10 years.  This commitment to the startup lifecycle recently expanded with the launch of WU Ignite Ventures, an initiative that allows the university to take an active role by investing directly in promising companies born within its ecosystem.

WU Entrepreneurship Center (EC) is the central hub for students  interested in entrepreneurship. For over a decade, the EC has been dedicated to fostering an entrepreneurial spirit not just at WU, but across Europe’s leading universities. In this time, the EC organized over 1000 events, brought together over 60.000 students and supported 650 startup teams.   serve as the vibrant stage where the Danube Cup international final pitching takes place.

National Pre-Selections

Each DC partner university can nominate two student start-up teams to compete in the Semi-Final. The teams will be mentored by the respective universities preparing for the Semi-Final. To be eligible, teams must meet the following requirements and must be nominated by the delegating universities of the Danube Cup network:

Selection Criteria:

  • Validation: We are looking for teams that have already performed validation research for their ideas, at least locally. This event is not an idea competition, so teams are required to have already performed some market research or gained traction. The applicants must have validated the business idea among potential customers, the product must be innovative and enjoy a growth potential independently of local market trends.
  • Team sizeat least two, max. five members.
  • Availability: teams must be available for the Danube Cup program; in exceptional cases, a single member may also pitch.
  • Student teams: even though it is acceptable for a team to have non-student member(s) but most team members must be individuals with a valid student status. At least one team member must be a registered student of a DC partner university
  • Funding: teams must be in a early stage of development i.e. not have received any equity related financial backing by professional third-party accelerators, existing companies or venture capitalists

SUMMARY:  a teams must be made up of 2 to 5 members, with each member belonging to one team only. The majority of the team members must be registered students, at least one member must study at a DC partner university. Delegated start-ups should bring a validated business concept, should be innovative and have growth potential, and should not have received any external funding from any third parties. Owning a prototype is not a prerequisite of eligibility for participation in the competition.

What to expect at the Final?

The grand finale of the Danube Cup takes place as a highlight of the Entrepreneurship Avenue Conference, Europe’s largest student-led startup event series. This vibrant setting provides finalists with an unparalleled stage to showcase their company’s innovative solutions, ideas, and technologies to a broad international audience.

Entrepreneurship Avenue is a free and extracurricular event series covering an inspiring kick-off event, a set of five workshops (“stages”) and the final highlight, the conference day. To date, the series has engaged over 28,000 students and supported 460 startup teams. Notably, half of these ventures are cross-disciplinary, proving that the most successful ideas emerge when talent from different academic backgrounds collaborates. This focus on inter-university partnership perfectly aligns with the Danube Cup’s mission, creating a unique international stage where diverse perspectives drive innovation along the river.
